This exhibition presents photographs of plants from the Alpine Botanical Garden Juliana in Trenta, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026. The garden was founded in 1926 by the mountaineer, botanist, and timber merchant Albert Bois de Chesne. Juliana is the first alpine botanical garden in a natural environment within the territory of present-day Slovenia. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated Slovenian naturalists, the garden has been preserved for future generations and has operated under the auspices of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History since 1962. Since 1951, it has been protected as a monument of designed nature and is listed among Slovenia’s natural values.
The photographs depict some of Slovenia’s protected, rare, and endemic plant species – true botanical treasures. As individual species bloom at different times, visitors to the garden can admire them from late spring until early autumn.
The photographs were taken by museum photographer David Kunc, who wished to present a somewhat more artistic side of plant photography. Therefore, the photographs do not primarily focus on the distinctive identifying features of individual species, but rather on colour patterns, shapes, and details of flowers that reveal their exceptional beauty.
