A Visit to the Vrata Valley

The valley through which river Triglavska Bistrica flows is approximately 11 kilometers long. The hiking trail through the valley, called the Triglavska Bistrica Trail, is suitable for moderately prepared hikers. The trail starts at the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana (Triglavska cesta 49).

The Triglavska Bistrica Trail leads from Mojstrana along the Triglavska Bistrica River, past the Peričnik Waterfall and Galerije, to the head of the Vrat Valley. You can also view the brochure for the Triglavska Bistrica Trail.

We recommend that visitors who do not plan to walk through the Vrata Valley use the free shuttle service, which includes buses and an electric van.

You can reach the Peričnik Waterfall by taking the Triglav National Park electric van, which operates on a circular route without a fixed schedule during the summer; the the boarding stop is near the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana.

Tip: You can leave your car at one of the parking spaces in Mojstrana and use public transportation to visit the Vrata Valley.   

Access to the Vrata Valley by car is restricted by a barrier; the daily fee between June 15 and September 15, 2026, is 20 euros. The barrier is operated by Komunala Kranjska Gora (on-call phone number: +386 30 995 799).

There are parking lots at the end of the Vrata Valley, which fill up quickly when there are many visitors. When the parking lots are full, the barrier at the entrance to the valley will not open.

Motorcycles and motorhomes are prohibited in the Vrata Valley.

At the end of the valley, hikers will find the Aljaž Hut in Vrata, which offers a magnificent view of Triglav’s north face.

Well-prepared hikers can set out from the Vrata Valley to climb Slovenia’s highest and second-highest peaks, Triglav and Škrlatica. Aljažev Dom in Vrata is also an excellent starting point for hikes to Stenar, Kriški Podi, and other peaks in this part of the Julian Alps.
