The Mangrt Road
If you would like to explore this beautiful part of Triglav National Park by hiking, you can take the easier Mangrt Educational Trail or set out on the more challenging Hay-carriers' Trail. You can view the brochure about the Mangrt Road.
The Mangrt Road, which winds its way up through 17 curves toward the Mangart Pass (2,055 meters above sea level), is open during the summer season. In July and August, public transportation (line B1) is available from Bovec and Log pod Mangartom to the Mangart Pass and back down to the valley. Buses and electric van run from July 1 through August 31, 2026.
The hut at the Mangrtsko Saddle is currently closed for renovations.
If you decide to travel by car or motor vehicle, please take into account the restrictions and the fact that driving on the road requires payment of an environmental fee (10 euros). Drivers pay the environmental fee at the barrier. Camper vans are not permitted on Mangart Road.
An automatic barrier with a traffic counter is installed near pasture Mangart, and at the start of the road to the Mangart Pass (near Mlinč), you’ll see a digital display showing parking space availability. The display informs you when the parking lots are full, and the automatic barrier will not open until parking spaces become available.
The 12-kilometre-long road is accessible up to the ninth kilometre,—that is, up to the parking lot near the turnoff for the mountain hut. From there onward, the road is closed to all vehicles due to a rockslide. The hut at the Mangrtsko Saddle is currently closed for renovations.
Important notice: Mangart Road is narrow and steep, and guardrails are not present along all sections. Passing other vehicles requires great caution and may involve reversing to passing places. Drivers should also be aware of cyclists on the road.
As noted, from Mangart Road you can take the easier Mangart Educational Trail or choose the more challenging Hay-carriers Trail. Mangart Saddle is also the starting point for the ascent to Mangart (2,679 m), the third highest peak in Slovenia. Before heading into Triglav National Park, always check the weather forecast, trail conditions, and road conditions.
Finally, here is an interesting fact: at the beginning of Mangart Road, near the barrier, there is a 500-year-old alpine pasture located at an altitude of 1,295 m. The tradition of alpine grazing is still alive today, with Bovec sheep mainly grazing here during the summer months. This indigenous breed from the Julian Alps is well adapted to mountain conditions. Its milk is traditionally used to produce Bovec cheese, cottage cheese, and yoghurt, following a long-standing tradition passed down through generations. These products can also be purchased at the alpine pasture between May and October..
