Mitigating biodiversity impacts of sports events
There is growing recognition of the need for sport and sports events to be conducted in socially and environmentally responsible ways and this is reflected in the attitudes of governments, public authorities and regulators. This means that taking a proactive and diligent approach to environmental management is a vital part of the sport sector’s licence to operate as well as growing and sustaining fan bases. Biodiversity conservation should be a key element in any environmentally responsible approach to sports event management. These guidelines focus on the often complex links between biodiversity and sport, and highlight that sports events can also benefit biodiversity. Each event offers an opportunity to raise public awareness of the value of nature and influence attitudes towards biodiversity and its conservation. These guidelines provide an overview of the issues and risks. They also offer help on how to make informed choices in avoiding harmful impacts and achieving positive outcomes. All parties involved in the planning and delivery of sports events are responsible for understanding and managing the potential biodiversity impacts and opportunities to ensure no lasting harm, and preferably a lasting positive legacy.

Visitors' Guide to the Julian Alps Biosphere Area - winter (Winter 2019/2020)
In cooperation with the Julian Alps Community, the Triglav National Park Public Institute is preparing guides for visitors to the Julian Alps Biosphere Area. The magazine in Slovenian and English provides tips for excursions, useful information for visiting in winter, interesting facts about the animals of the Triglav National Park, ideas for winter hikes with detailed descriptions. The youngest children will also find it useful.
The magazine is available at all information points of the Triglav National Park and at the tourist offices of the Julian Alps Biosphere Area.

Successional stages in the development of forest vegetation in cirques of two valleys in the Julian Alps (NW Slovenia)
We investigated different types of vegetation in cirques of two valleys in the Julian Alps, Zadnjica and Kot, which develop on slope screes and are heavily influenced by avalanches that occur here every year. Our phytosociological analysis identified the following shrub-forest developmental stages: Saliceteum eleagno-purpureae hieracietosum porrifolii var. Achnatherum calamagrostis, Homogyno sylvestris-Salicetum glabrae, Polysticho lonchitis-Rhamnetum fallacis, Rhododendro hirsuti-Laburnetum alpini, Rhodothamno-Laricetum deciduae anemonetosum trifoliae and Rhododendro hirsuti-Fagetum sylvaticae var. Sorbus chamaemespilus. On unconsolidated fluvio-glacial deposits in the Kot Valley we determined the following successional stages: Salicetum eleagno-purpurae hieracietosum porrifolii var. Pinus mugo, Amelanchiero ovalis-Pinetum mugo laricetosum and Rhododendro hirsuti-Fagetum sylvaticae petasitetosum paradoxi.

Snow-bed communities with dominant Salix herbacea in the Julian Alps
In the alpine belt of the Julian Alps (glacial cirque Na Jezerih under Mt. Veliki Rokav, Jarečica, the Mangart Saddle and Prodi under Mt. Mangart as well as Mt. Plešivec in the rock wall of Loška Stena) we studied the phytosociology and ecology of snow-bed vegetation with dominating flowering plants Salix herbacea, Luzula alpinopilosa, Gnaphalium supinum, Soldanella pusilla and Salix retusa, and numerous moss species. Based on the comparison with similar snow-bed communities in the Central, Eastern and Southern Alps we described a new association Salicetum retuso-herbaceae and classified it into the alliance Salicion herbaceae and class Salicetea herbaceae. We determined several successional stages of snow-bed vegetation on mixed calcareous-silicate bedrock that we treat as variants, in two relevés also the initial association Polytrichetum sexangularis.
