The Pokljuka forests are interspersed with many wetland areas in various stages of preservation. They are located in an area under strong human impact. Summer and winter tourism, traffic, urbanisation and economic activities are just a few of the activities that can have a strong negative impact on bog environments. The only solution to limiting or preventing these activities is redirection of public attention and visitation.
This was the primary purpose for creating the Goreljek Bog Nature Trail. One bog was sacrificed for educational purposes so that others could be preserved. The trail runs around the Goreljek bog, which is located in the centre of a holiday cottage settlement and has as such already been sacrificed.
The purpose of the trail is to present the special features and the importance of peat bogs, which are classified among the most valuable natural areas in Europe. The trail is circular, measures approximately 1 km and has 5 educational stops equipped with information boards. The information boards present useful facts on the peat bog flora and fauna, Pokljuka today and in the past, general characteristics of peat bogs and human activities in the surrounding areas. A surfaced path around the bog, supplemented by an occasional floating floor, ensures safe walking. The board at the entrance, located at the northern side of the bog, near a small chapel, states the general rules of conduct. The trail is intended for all chance visitors to Pokljuka and for all regular visitor groups, school children, students and tourists. The trail is also the subject of natural science days for primary and secondary school children. Starting point: the Goreljek pasture on the Pokljuka plateau, a 2-hour tour
