Title

Astronomical evening at Vogel

Black holes in the Universe

Evening will start with a talk on astronomy (detailed below) at 8 pm by prof. Tomaž Zwitter from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana. Weather permitting, the talk will be followed by practical astronomical observations, to be led by Tilen Kuhar. In case of bad weather we shall stay inside and show how Solar and Lunar eclipses occur, what are the phases of the Moon and planets, make a simple telescope or show how the ion propulsion works.

The event will end at 10:30 pm. There will be cable cars operating at 7:30 pm and at 8:00 pm and after end of event.

Price of the cable car return ticket and the event is 8 euro (adults) and 6 euro (children younger than 15 years).

Black holes contain so much mass in such a confined space that nothing can escape them, not even light. Their existence was predicted by Einstein's general theory of relativity a century ago. Nowadays they present a standard way to explain the fate of cores of massive stars, but they can be found also in centers of active galaxies, even a collision of two black holes has been spotted a few times. The talk will start with an overview of black holes with masses similar to stars, next we will comment on the first image of a black hole published recently, and finally we will mention gravitational waves which are produced when black holes collide. Related research results of Slovenian astrophysicists will be mentioned.
